Should a child younger than 18 be sentenced the same way as an adult?
Should a child younger than 18 be allowed to vote?
Should a child younger than 18 be allowed to drink alcohol?
Should a child younger than 18 be allowed to watch porn?
Should a child younger than 18 live in a prison cell with a 30 year old?

In the state of Texas, the only question with an answer of “YES” is the last one. Since 1910, all 17 year olds in Texas, arrested for a crime, are automatically charged as adults. In all other things they are labeled as juveniles. Women, who are the most compassionate and empathetic of humans, were denied their right to vote until 10 years later, when the 19thAmendment of the United States Constitution was ratified in 1920. Citizens who are 18, the closest “adult” peers a 17 year old has, were denied the right to vote until 51 years after that, when the 26thAmendment was ratified in 1971. If the most compassionate and empathetic people in our society, and those who can most readily relate to 17 year olds, had no part in putting this law into place, isn’t it about time their feelings on the subject are included? The law, and its effects, can be corrected in 2021 – when the next Texas legislative session begins.

This petition argues for legislation that makes 18 the age of Adult felony charges in the state of Texas. This petition also seeks legislation that sets 20 years as the maximum time a person has to serve to be granted an opportunity for parole, if they were convicted of a crime that was committed before their 18thbirthday.
Yes, punishment needs to be given; if for no other reason, but to learn remorse – but the guilt of a child is in no way equal to the guilt of an aware adult. As such, their punishment should not be equal either. Let the Texas legislature see how out of place this law from 1910 is in 2020 (Texas is one of the only three states left with such laws on its books: see Georgia and Wisconsin). It cost nothing to show your support for this 110 year overdue change. Just sign this petition and share it with other courageous people you know. You will prevent more young lives from being uselessly thrown away. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
