On March 2, 2022, Tesla implemented a new 4-tiers pricing structure to their pay-per-minute Superchargers in Canada, replacing the less precise 2-tiers structure in order to better reflect the different charging speeds, a very welcome update in itself.

Unfortunately, while doing so, they also quietly introduced a much less welcome MASSIVE price increase that in many cases more than DOUBLED the cost of using their Superchargers network throughout the country.

For example, a 22 minutes charging session at a 250 kW Supercharger in Quebec done in February cost $9.90. The same 22 minutes charging session, done under very similar conditions after the price increase, cost a whopping $24.16 – nearly 2.5x more!

Another real-life example: a 1,000 km trip that used to cost $0.34-$0.43 per minute of charging (depending on outside temperature) cost over $1 per minute after the change.

This price increase quickly adds up to hundreds, if not thousands of extra dollars that average Tesla owners will now have to pay each year for their use of the Tesla Superchargers network.

Using Tesla’s Superchargers network in Canada now costs significantly more than in the United States, despite the fact that the price of electricity is actually lower in Canada.

Tesla has publicly stated in the past that their Superchargers network “will never be a profit center for Tesla” [source], and in March, Elon Musk also replied to a tweet on this issue, saying that he “will look into it” and re-affirming that their “aspiration is just to make a modest return”. While this is encouraging, there is no definite indication as to when or even if they will actually fix the situation. Until then, it appears that Tesla’s actions in this matter do not quite line up with their public statements.

More recently, Tesla did re-adjust their Supercharger rates, slightly reducing the rates for higher tiers, while also quite significantly increasing the rates for lower tiers. In the end, the total cost of an average charging session was barely reduced and is still more than double what it was before March.

If this petition is still active, it is because Tesla have yet to act and thus we need to keep the pressure on so that they do act, and sooner rather than later.

For example, a 22 minutes charging session done in February cost $9.90, while the same 22 minutes charging session, done under very similar conditions after the price increase, cost nearly 2.5x more, at $24.16!

Despite the very significant financial implications of this price increase on Tesla owners, which can be up to hundreds or even thousands of dollars per year, very few people are talking about it. This price increase directly contradicts their commitment to not turn their Superchargers network into a profit center, and even goes against their core mission to accelerate the transition to sustainable energy.

While Elon Musk said in a tweet posted a couple months ago that he would “look into it”, there’s no indication of when or even if Tesla will actually revise their new prices. They did re-adjust their prices more recently, but while they slightly reduced the higher tiers, they also actually increased the lower tiers, so it made very little difference in the total cost of an average charging session.

A petition was recently created to ask Tesla to quickly address this issue and significantly reduce the price increase.
