Latest research suggests that 8 million metric tonnes of plastic continues to end up in our oceans every year. Despite efforts to reduce, reuse and recycle, are we really doing enough to stop this? Our oceans have more plastic in them than sea creatures. Not to mention the amount of plastic that ends up in landfill. One if the biggest polluters is still supermarket plastic bags - yes, the reusable kind.

There is one simple solution that could have a great impact. Rather than put the onus on the individual, as big companies like to do, let's put pressure back on those corporations who could provide the biggest impact.

If the big UK supermarkets simply stopped providing plastic bags, at whatever the cost, surely it would mean the general public would always ensure they carried reusable bags. Let's face it, how many of us kick ourselves for forgetting our bags as we pop in for our weekly shop? Yet how many of us would remember them if we knew there was no option but to bring our own? 

A simple solution that could have a huge impact. Come on UK supermarkets - stop providing reusable plastic bags in all stores. Make change happen!
