In this new world of living in a health crisis and the need to protect ourselves and our loved ones, wearing masks are a proven way to help stop the spread of covid-19.

Inside public places wearing masks are a hindrance to deaf and hard of hearing public. Most rely on lip reading to help understand those who are speaking, masks have made this impossible so they are relying on speech to hear.

When shopping in this already difficult situation it has come very apparent just how loud and noisy the surroundings are when shopping; not only do they have to contend with the background noise, there is an added pressure from the music that is played throughout the shop and other domains.

As a parent of a child with hearing loss, I have began to see the difference it has made on my child when going out with him. I have to yell over my mask, repeat what others have said to him, ask the shop assistant to turn the music down so we can enjoy a simple task of shopping together.

It has made us all think about how we as a whole can help all those who live with a hearing loss more welcome in this loud world we all take for granted.

We are asking that all shops and child play areas, places that the public use, to turn the music off or down to a level that makes it easier for hearing loss to not have to fight with to hear.

Thank you.
