Tell Dominion Virginia Power "NO" to Dumping Toxic Waste in Quantico Creek

We are asking Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe and David Paylor, Director of the state's Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), to deny a plan by Virginia Dominion Power to dump millions of gallons of toxic coal ash wastewater into Quantico Creek, a tributary of the Potomac River that is teeming with wildlife and used for a wide range of recreational activities.

Following months public concern, media coverage, and legal action, Virginia's Department of Environmental Quality inexplicably approved Dominion's plan on January 14, 2016, allowing the company to proceed with dumping approximately 200 million gallons of largely untreated coal ash wastewater from Dominion's adjacent Possum Point Power Station into Quantico Creek.

Dominion's cost-cutting plan has been described a "violation of the Clean Water Act" and "highly hazard for aquatic life" by Potomac Riverkeeper Network, an organization currently taking legal action to block the state-sanctioned polluting of Quantico Creek's delicate wetlands.

Public reaction to this issue has been remarkably bipartisan, with Prince William County Board of Supervisors Chairman Corey Stewart (R) labeling Dominion a "horrible corporate citizen", and the county's Democratic Party head Harry Wiggins stating that Virginia's DEQ is nothing more than "an arm of Dominion Power".

We also request that the Department of Environmental Quality and Virginia Dominion Power conduct sampling studies around Quantico Creek to determine levels of existing contamination of water, wildlife, and sediment.

Additionally, we are asking the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and its director, Gina McCarthy, to investigate and block this plan under the Clean Water Act, a policy for which Quantico Creek meets all requirements.
