A Provision to choose remote learning & no mandatory in-person school attendance irrespective of the health condition until kids (5-11) qualify for COVID vaccines.

An appeal by the concerned parents of Bennington Public Schools (BPS), Nebraska, to provide an option to choose remote learning for our children, starting Fall 2021, due to the constant increase in the number of COVID-19 Delta variant cases. We also appeal that no mandatory in-person attendance at schools be implemented.

Our concerns:

1) COVID Delta variant cases on the rise every day. Another wave of Delta variant seems imminent. We have only 50% of the qualified population fully vaccinated in Nebraska.

2) Delta variant is making younger people, teens and even kids of small age sick with severe respiratory symptoms resulting in more hospitalizations and in some cases deaths.

3) Kids between the ages of 5-11 are not vaccinated yet, and they are the easy targets for the Delta variant. As per CDC, the Delta variant is known to cause severe symptoms, including fatality, among the unvaccinated group of people.

4) Elementary and middle school kids won't qualify for vaccines until early winter of 2021.

A lot of parents and their kids who had chosen to do remote learning in the previous school year were excited at the prospect of in person learning in the school year 2021-2022. But the rise in the Delta variant cases across the country threw cold water on the parents' excitement and has forced all the concerned parents to rethink the situation for the overall safety of their kids and the community.

We all know how important in person learning is for kids, but it is also more important to keep the kids healthy and safe until the time they qualify for vaccines. Once this age group is vaccinated, we can all feel comfortable with 100% in-person learning. But until then, we request the BPS leadership to re-evaluate the situation and honor the remote learning option request from the concerned parents, irrespective of their kids' health condition.
