The recently added pedestrian bump out at the corner of California Street and Massachusetts Avenue NW has substantially and unnecessarily complicated the traffic pattern at this intersection. With the added bump out, to turn from California Street either direction onto Massachusetts Avenue necessitates that a driver cross the yellow centerline on California Street.
Prior to the addition of the bump out, this intersection of California Street and Massachusetts Avenue functioned smoothly; the width of California Street at the intersection was (a) modest for pedestrian crossing and (b) governed by a traffic signal with walk indicators for pedestrians. Any consideration of alternative solutions such as converting California Street to one-way traffic would further add significant and unnecessary burden to residents of the neighborhood.
The bump out does not resolve any recognized hazards to pedestrians or automobiles. It should be restored to its prior design immediately.
