Placing a Traffic light on Bennett Road and Highway 30

Oregon Department of Transportation statistics measuring state roads placed the intersection of Bennett Road and Highway 30 in the top 2% of most Dangerous intersection in the state. SPIS data shows Bennett Road has a deeper history of fatal and near-fatal crashes. In 2008, I lost my son to an accident at Hwy 30 and Bennett Rd. I have since then been an advocate for safety improvements at that intersection and was invited to be a part of the Columbia County Traffic Committee. There have been numerous accidents and far too many fatalities there. Through the hard work and determination of those on the committee, including Sen. Betsy Johnson, we have managed to secure approximately 4 million in funding from the state and ODOT. The problem is this: It has become a "use it or lose it" situation. The past few years have been spent doing studies and working on designs. Per ODOT engineers, there would have to be a traffic light installed at Millard intersection first because their algorithm demands that they work from town, outward, with signals at intersections. Which would put Millard before Bennett. I believe that due to the volume of accidents at Bennett coupled with the severity of those accidents, we the people would be better served with a light at Bennett/Hwy 30. If the light went in at Millard, then all of the Marina traffic would be routed there and it would be "right turn only" off Bennett on to Hwy 30. I have been tasked by Sen. Johnson to meet with an ODOT Engineer. I know what I want, but I need to know what the citizens of Columbia County want so that I can best represent you when I meet with ODOT. Thank you for taking the time to sign this Petition. Drive safe out there!
