Call Out Racism, Anti-Semitism and White Supremacy at the University of Virginia

This past weekend, thousands of white supremacists and neo-nazis descended on the University of Virginia campus in Charlottesville to spread racially and anti-semitic motivated hate, intimidation, and fear. The response to these actions from UVA president Teresa Sullivan has been inadequate.
There are more than 1300 Black students and 6000 students of color at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. The lives of these students, who were the direct targets of the white supremacist protests, matter. President Sullivan’s statements have failed to affirm the value of the lives of those people of color who were the subject of the vile racist actions of these white supremacists and neo-nazis.
As new students arrive on campus this week and the August 22nd start of the fall term approaches, president Sullivan’s statements have failed to name and condemn the white supremacists and neo-nazis who terrorized the UVA campus and Charlottesville.
President Sullivan, you have not done enough to respond to the threats at UVA. We call on you to publically denounce the actions of the white supremacists and neo-nazis, to explicitly name racism, anti-semitism, and white supremacy as the willful motive for this weekend’s violence and murder, and to commit to addressing racism and anti-semitism when it comes to your campus, starting by naming it when it occurs.
