After a record breaking Hopman Cup that attracted the highest crowd numbers in the competition's history, the iconic tournament is set to be axed next summer in favour of a new ATP men's tournament.
The Hopman Cup is a completely unique competition which brings some of the world's best tennis players to Perth for a week of high quality tennis in a fun environment. The Hopman Cup is clearly a hit with tennis fans as over 110,000 people turned out to watch the 2018/19 competition. It also allows the athletes to play at least three high quality singles matches ahead of their Australian Open campaigns, as well as fostering friendships between compatriots and competitors alike through the always-exciting mixed doubles matches.
If the Hopman Cup does not continue Perth will not only lose an incredibly historic event, but will also miss out on hosting some of the world's best female players as the proposed ATP tournament would be solely a men's competition.
Perth tennis fans are calling on Tennis Australia, the ITF, the ATP, the WTA, and the Government of Western Australia to ensure that the Hopman Cup is allowed to continue next summer and beyond. There is no tournament in the world quite like the Hopman Cup, and tennis would be worse off for losing it.
