Barbara Murphy started this petition to Tennessee State House and

Women in Tennessee won the right to vote 100 years ago. It was a hard fight, and after securing the right to vote these same women lobbied to have the Equal Rights Amendment added to the Constitution, giving women equal rights under the law. That was in 1923, and it wasn’t until 1972 that Tennessee would endorse the amendment declaring that Equal Rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged on the basis of sex. Unfortunately, that support was rescinded in 1974, and we believe it’s time our state recognizes the equality of women under the law and ratify the Equal Rights Amendment.

For far too long, women have been treated as second class citizens, paid lower wages, suffered discrimination based solely on our sex, (on the job, in housing and financial matters) and denied equality under the law. We think the men of Tennessee have had enough time to adjust to the fact that women should have the same rights they have. Most of our men agree that they couldn’t do without us, and whether they like it or not we will not be treated as second class citizens! It will save time, marriages and countless lawsuits if the State of Tennessee takes up the issue again and makes it the law of the land. How long must we wait? Please join us in calling for action Now!
