We, the citizens of the State of TN, call for the resignation of the Commissioner of Education Candace McQueen.
This is the second consecutive year that there have been failures with the state's testing system. Vendors and tests have changed, but the leadership at the top has remained the same. We demand accountability from our students, teachers, and schools. We now demand it from our Education Department as well.
Our state promotes "test based accountability". The recent failure of the TNReady Online test, a test in which the state invested $108 million dollars, is yet another failure at the state level. We have required our counties to provide, with no assistance from the state, millions of taxpayer dollars to provide technology to prepare for online assessment that was discontinued on the first day of testing. The State Department of Education has spent our tax dollars promoting TNReady on the radio and in print. We have required our teachers and students to prepare for a failed test. We will now require every school system in the state to pause while we move back to pencil-and-paper testing.
In spite of warnings from districts across the state, McQueen insisted on proceeding with a plan many predicted would be a disaster. This should be the last year that our children and our educators are subjected to failed testing practices.
As a state that values accountability, we now demand it from our legislators. We call for the resignation of the Commissioner of Education.
