Tennessee's students and Tennessee's hard-working teachers--among the lowest paid in the nation--deserve more. We urge the State Board of Education to preserve the state minimum salary schedule providing fair, equitable salary increases for teachers.
The overall effect of the proposed changes is a substantial reduction in teacher salary requirements from the state, especially the requirement for improved salaries for teachers with degrees above a master’s. In addition, the new proposal means the state would not recognize the value of teachers beyond 11 years of service.
The State Board of Education should delay any changes to the state minimum salary schedule until the Huffman proposal can be fully studied.
