Tennessee Needs Common Sense Gun Legislation

Tennessee Needs Common Sense Gun Legislation
Why this petition matters
Tennessee Legistators
We citizens of Chattanooga, Tennessee are writing to implore you to please, please do something to address the obscene continuing gun violence that has resulted in multiple deaths of innocent adults and children in our country. We write recognizing that the issue of gun violence and it’s association with the ease of availability of high muzzle velocity semi automatic weapons and high-capacity magazines has been an ugly constant that has failed to be addressed by our country’s leaders.
We will refrain from citing statistics, facts, and figures related to gun violence in our country and other similar countries throughout the world. This has been done ad nauseam in the past. The facts are clear, there is no need in repeating them again. We are tired of the same old pivot of argument to a cacophony of societal problems that have been used to divert attention away from the existential issue of too many guns being easily attainable by too many people who may have societal, mental, or hate issues. The time has come for you to act to do something that has the potential to reduce the incidence of the slaughter of innocent people in our country.
To be specific in the actions that we are demanding you consider implementing as law in our country we provide the following. We demand that the sale of semi automatic hi muzzle velocity long guns be banned. As well we demand the banning of magazines of greater than 10 round capacity. To facilitate the reduction of the numbers of these weapons already possessed by individuals, we demand a buyback program to significantly compensate owners of these weapons and magazines for their turning them over to authorities. We also demand the implementation of “red flag laws“ and thorough background checks for individuals making purchases of weapons. As well “ Wait periods“ are needed during the purchase of weapons. As well, loopholes that facilitate Gun sales from one individual to another and at gun shows need to be rectified.
There are other measures that should be considered for legislation. For simplicity sake we provide only the ones listed above as our demands. However, consideration of other measures should certainly be part of the legislative dialogue. Like measures to require a greater degree of individual responsibility for weapons that have been purchased Including safe storage of weapons and the insuring of purchased weapons.
To conclude we simply wish to reiterate our demands for you to address the existential issue of gun violence in our country. You who have been elected to represent the people of this country are responsible to do something to prevent further suffering by innocent people at the hands of gun wielding murderers. We demand your action at this point in time for the specific problem of guns in our country.
