Leah J started this petition to Tennessee Higher Education Commission

Talk of MTSU opening a law school started back in June. MTSU had secured a non-binding letter of intent to transfer Valparaiso University’s law program to MTSU. I personally, amongst many other aspiring attorneys at MTSU, was very excited to hear this news as I graduate from MTSU in May 2019 and have been planning on applying to law schools. There aren’t many options for law school in Tennessee. Vanderbilt, Belmont, and Nashville School of Law being costly, and Memphis and Knoxville being much further away. On Monday, October 15th, after a 4 hour long meeting, the law school transfer to MTSU was denied by the Tennessee Higher Education Commission. It was an 8 to 5 vote, with 5 of the 8 opposing votes coming from attorneys and law schools in Memphis and Knoxville. As MTSU is growing, speculation is that the opposing voters from Knoxville and Memphis saw MTSU’s potential law school opening as a threat; more competition for them. A public law school offers an otherwise impossible opportunity for low income students. The denial of MTSU’s law school transfer means that many of us aspiring lawyers must relocate, at least hundred of miles away to Knoxville or Memphis, or put ourselves into great debt trying to get into a local private law school. Us residents of Middle TN are further away from a public, accredited law school than anyone - yet we are the 7th largest growing region in the NATION. If you are an aspiring lawyer, who was looking forward to applying to MTSU for law school, or even if you just feel like this was the wrong decision, please sign this petition!
