Toronto tenants deserve better

To all candidates seeking election in this municipal election,
There are approximately 164,000 tenants living in Toronto Community Housing and over 90,000 families on Housing Connections wait list.
Co-op housing is facing drastic cuts to their subsidies and affordable home ownership programs are facing many hurdles like obtaining land and getting permits quickly through City Hall.
Let’s not forget that both TCHC and the City have been trying to sell off our desperately needed housing stock, (with as many as 1,000 homes discussed to sell), to pay for the current and growing $750 million backlog of capital repairs.
It is safe to say that Toronto is facing an affordable housing crisis.
We need a City Council that has solutions and not just band aid answers. We need a City Council committed to creating and maintaining an affordable Toronto to live in.
Tenants deserve a City Council that implements effective short and long-term solutions to TCHC’s failing housing stock and Toronto’s housing waiting list. We need effective initiatives to support our co-ops and affordable home ownership programs.
I am joining tenants across Toronto and calling on all candidates to make housing a priority in this municipal election and in the next term of Council.
