Pets make up an important part of our whanau. They are family and therefore make a house a home. They provide companionship, security, and for many an opportunity to go for a walk.

Although the concern of most landlords is damage to their property, most pets will cause less damage (and noise) than a toddler. And with so many opting out or unable to have children, pets are in some ways the new kiwi child.

For some, not allowing pets in rental properties is literally ending the dream of becoming a parent.

All of this has a direct negative impact on the mental health of a proportion of Kiwis who are already vulnerable to mental health issues.

Until owning your own house is attainable to ALL kiwis, we need to ensure that all kiwis can feel at home and part of a family whilst renting.

There are even situations where families have to give up their beloved pets because pet friendly rentals are so few and far between. That's a family member of sometimes 15+ years. Heart-breaking.

According to the 2018 census, there are 1.4 million kiwis renting. That is nearly a third of the total population. A large proportion that is denied access to having a fury companion.

Let us be rid of these archaic laws and ban the 'no pets' clause in New Zealand rental property contracts.
