TEMPORARILY SUSPEND THE SAFE THIRD COUNTRY AGREEMENT WITH U.S.A.

GOVERNMENT OF CANADA: TEMPORARILY SUSPEND THE SAFE THIRD COUNTRY AGREEMENT WITH THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA UNTIL A THOROUGH INTERNATIONAL REVIEW OF THE VALIDITY OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AS A SAFE THIRD PARTY HAS BEEN COMPLETED.
The sight of vulnerable children being separated from their primary caregivers during a highly stressful period and being sent to "chain link pens" is heartbreaking and cannot, in good conscience, be supported. The long term impacts on these children (and their parents) is unimaginable. To that end, given that:
· Legitimate recognition under the Third Party Agreement requires that a country’s policies and practices with respect to refugee claimants are in alignment with the 1951 Refugee Convention and the 1984 Convention Against Torture,
· The United States’ current officially acknowledged and enacted policies to separate asylum seeking children from their primary caregivers has been condemned by the United Nations and the United Nations High Commission for Refugees,
we the undersigned request that the Government of Canada temporarily suspend the Safe Third Country Agreement with the United States of America until a full review of the validity of the United States as a safe third party has been completed.
In the interim, this would allow the Canadian Government and Canadian border officials to support asylum seekers based on Canadian and International law and values for human rights and dignity.
