To our Deans and Leaders of Temple Health Science Campus:
The health science campus at Temple University, encompassing Temple Pharmacy, Temple Dental, Temple Medicine, and Temple Public Health, lacks a mental health counseling center. Unfortunately, this lack of infrastructure is affecting our students. Our student body is a part of a rigorous, high stress program and we require accessible mental health services. Our students are directed to the Tuttleman Counseling Services located in Temple Main Campus, where over thirty thousand undergraduate students are also directed. These resources are especially inaccessible this semester since the main campus counseling is overbooked and no longer taking on new students. Students are able to access emergency resources for students in need of immediate help. However, expecting students to determine that they require emergency mental health access is a dangerous barrier to care.
Temple University School of Pharmacy’s Student National Pharmaceutical Association is writing you on behalf of the health science campus student body to explain our critical need for mental health services. Our students balance professional school, extracurricular activities, and many of us work in multiple pharmacy settings. The stress of balancing our many responsibilities with our personal lives necessitates the health science campus to provide our own mental health services. We call on our health science school faculty to provide temporary arrangements for our pharmacy, dental, and medical students considering our current situation. It is our goal that temporary services will give our student body the support they need today. However, we ultimately seek a permanent mental health service center located in our health science campus. Moving forward, we hope to work with our faculty to create a permanent mental health service fitting for our student body.
