Tell the USDA to ban the sale of foie gras!

Cruelty finds its way into our food supply way too often, but few foods are more sickening and cruel than foie gras. What sounds like it might be a fancy, French gastronomical delight actually translates to mean ‘fatty liver.’ A liver that is forcefully and painfully fattened, for a life of misery and a death of cruelty. Most people do not know that the "delicacy" of foie gras is produced by force-feeding the ducks and geese huge amounts of grain several times a day through tubes that have been shoved down their throats. This causes the birds' livers swell up to ten or more times their normal size as a result of disease –and according to a recent National Academy of Sciences study, this disease may make some consumers who eat foie gras more susceptible to secondary amyloidosis, a deadly disease affecting humans. Force-fed foie gras is not only barbaric and inhumane, but it poses such a frightening health risk that I decided to join the national non-profit Animal Legal Defense Fund in suing the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for allowing its sale. Under the federal Poultry Products Inspection Act, diseased organs should not be sold at all - let alone sold as a "delicacy." I believe that the food our country allows people to sell should not be fundamentally imbued with cruelty and harmful misinformation.

I am asking you to join me, the producer of Faux Gras™, a vegan paté made without harm, and the Animal Legal Defense Fund in asking the USDA to ban the sale of foie gras. Animal victims of abuse cannot speak for themselves—so concerned citizens and our legal system must speak up for them.

Letter to
Food Safety and Inspection Service United States Department of Agriculture
I join the Animal Legal Defense Fund in urging the USDA to ban the sale of foie gras. The USDA is violating the federal Poultry Products Inspection Act (PPIA) by allowing adulterated poultry—in the form of foie gras—to be sold to consumers. Under PPIA, the USDA is responsible for condemning all poultry products that come from diseased birds. Foie gras consists of the pathologically diseased livers of ducks who are force-fed massive amounts of grain, inducing the disease of hepatic lipidosis, which causes their livers to swell to ten or more times their normal size.

The unhealthy force-feeding of birds for foie gras production has been banned because of its egregious cruelty in over a dozen countries, and a California state ban will go into effect on July 1, 2012. Further, in addition to being diseased, foie gras products may induce disease. A recent study published by the National Academy of Sciences linked the consumption of foie gras to secondary amyloidosis, a deadly disease that affects humans. People with chronic inflammatory disease, including the 2.1 million Americans who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis, are at greater risk for developing secondary amyloidosis after eating force-fed foie gras.

For these reasons we urge you to end the sale of foie gras in the United States.

Sincerely,
