Tell the USDA to ban the sale of foie gras!
Cruelty finds its way into our food supply way too often, but few foods are more sickening and cruel than foie gras. What sounds like it might be a fancy, French gastronomical delight actually translates to mean ‘fatty liver.’ A liver that is forcefully and painfully fattened, for a life of misery and a death of cruelty. Most people do not know that the "delicacy" of foie gras is produced by force-feeding the ducks and geese huge amounts of grain several times a day through tubes that have been shoved down their throats. This causes the birds' livers swell up to ten or more times their normal size as a result of disease –and according to a recent National Academy of Sciences study, this disease may make some consumers who eat foie gras more susceptible to secondary amyloidosis, a deadly disease affecting humans. Force-fed foie gras is not only barbaric and inhumane, but it poses such a frightening health risk that I decided to join the national non-profit Animal Legal Defense Fund in suing the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for allowing its sale. Under the federal Poultry Products Inspection Act, diseased organs should not be sold at all - let alone sold as a "delicacy." I believe that the food our country allows people to sell should not be fundamentally imbued with cruelty and harmful misinformation.
I am asking you to join me, the producer of Faux Gras™, a vegan paté made without harm, and the Animal Legal Defense Fund in asking the USDA to ban the sale of foie gras. Animal victims of abuse cannot speak for themselves—so concerned citizens and our legal system must speak up for them.
