Tell the Senate to vote for the Pro-Parenting School Clubs bill
Take action to support a pro-parenting school clubs bill.
SB2488 reflects revisions supported by Tennessee Equality Project and is headed to the full Senate for a floor vote. A previous version of the bill required students to ask a parent for permission to participate in any school club or activity. Anti-gay interest groups have used such measures elsewhere to prevent the formation of Gay-Straight Alliances in schools.
In the previous version of the bill, students who were lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or an ally had to come out to their parents - often before they were ready or it was safe to do so.
SB2488 only requires schools to post information about school clubs and activities. If parents want to limit their child's school activities any way, they can express that wish in writing to the school. This pro-parenting bill prevents an administrative nightmare for school administrators and that recognizes the important role that parents play in raising their children.
