Tell the New York Times to Apologize for Blaming a Child for Her Gang Rape

I am so angry at the author James C. McKinley Jr. for his article "Vicious Assault Shakes Texas Town" and at the New York Times for publishing such an article. I love the New York Times and buy and read it every chance I get and I couldn't believe that my favorite newspaper would blame a child for being gang raped by 19 men because of what she was wearing. No matter what a woman is wearing, where is she, or if she has had a couple of drinks, rape is never the victim's fault or behavior that can be justified. Those 19 men were not "drawn in", they decided to forcibly rape an 11 year old girl.

As a young woman, this article made me wonder what would have happened if the victim was older, say twenty years old like myself. If James C. McKinley can point blame on a child wouldn't his blame pointing be much worse if she was older? I thought that the New York Times would be above such victim blaming and sexism towards women. I will not be buying or reading the New York Times until an apology is submitted.

Sincerely, Kaitlin Morris
