Tell the media to provide more positive images of women of color

Tell the media to provide more positive images of women of color

The Issue

For too long the media has persisted in promoting and reinforcing negative imagery about women of color--women of African, Asian, Hispanic/Latina, Middle Eastern, and Native American descent.  Women of color are now 30% of the U.S. female population but remain barely visible on network television programming.

The women of color that get roles on television often portray characters that are socially repugnant such as prostitutes, drug addicts, criminals, welfare queens, golddiggers, or liars.  Or else they are given stereotypical roles--as angry/emasculating, fiery/hot-tempered, or docile/meek women.

Even worse, these images are broadcast around the world daily, exporting these negative, stereotypical and extreme views of women of color to other countries and cultures. Not to mention the negative impact such images have on the psychosocial development of young women of color in the United States.

We are asking network television executives to include more positive images of women of color in their programming.

Women of color are now 30 million and counting. Let's use our collective voice to effect change in the media's portrayal of women of color.
