Tanigh Clark started this petition to massachuesttes athletic commision

Extreme weight cutting through dehydration is used by fighters to induce rapid weight loss prior to weight-class dependent, unarmed-combat bouts. Having caused numerous, well-publicized incidents of organ injury and death, extreme weight cutting is a longstanding practice in MMA and other combat sports. To date, just a few courageous states have taken action to through regulatory restrictions to ensure that fighter safety is the highest priority.

A specific proposal to adopt a simple 10-point plan to fight this deadly practice has been before the Massachusetts State Athletic Commission (MSAC) for nearly two years with no resulting action whatsoever. Already proven effective in California where it was unanimously approved and adopted in June 2017, the 10-point plan saves athletes’ lives, and must be adopted immediately in Massachusetts, and ultimately on a national level.

Friends and family of Rondel Da’twaun Clark, a 26-year-old MMA fighter from Sutton, MA who died three days after he collapsed during an amateur MMA bout, brought the 10-point plan proposal to the MSAC in November 2018.  Rondel died from extreme weight cutting through dehydration over a period of two days preceding his weigh in for a fight.

As fight day approaches, many fighters like Rondel find themselves needing to shed pounds in order to make weight in a particular fighting class. The only way to rapidly lose weight over a very short period of time is to reduce the body’s water volume (fat takes weeks, not days, to burn off). To do this, fighters dramatically curtail fluid intake, train in extreme heat to promote heavy sweating, and spend hours in saunas wearing trash bags and sweat suits to induce exceedingly profuse perspiration. In addition to short-term weight loss, the result of losing life-critical water can be profound injury to a fighter’s kidneys, and in Rondel’s case, outright kidney failure.

Rondel Clark is not the first fighter to die from extreme weight cutting through dehydration, and unless rules and regulations are changed, he will not be the last. Let us together take the first step toward nationwide regulations against this deadly practice by demanding that the MSAC adopt the 10-point plan immediately.

No matter where you live, your voice in support of fighter safety is crucial.

Tell the MSAC through this petition to stand up for the health and rights of combat sports fighters, adopt the 10-point plan and put an end to extreme weight cutting.
