The historic corner lot straddling the Sunnyside/Woodside border (39th Avenue and 50th Street, Queens, NY), which falls within the designated Sunnyside Gardens Historic District, is threatened again with impending private development. The corner lot is landmarked by the NYC Landmarks Preservation Committee (LPC) to ensure it remains in the public realm. The current proposal put forth by the developers is to build new housing developments on the lot; destroying for many in the greater neighborhood any opportunity for it to stay within the public realm and be transformed into potential green space and community garden. Along with the housing proposal, the developers also plan to relocate the 1931 "Aluminaire" House buttressed within the new development; in what we feel to be a strategic maneuver. We see the proposed situation of the Aluminaire House on our historic lot as a decoy or Trojan Horse to skirt around a Landmark Law in order to get the housing development approved.
Tell the Landmarks Commission to act on behalf of our community to stop this unwanted private development.
