A French parliamentary panel has recommend that Muslim women be banned from wearing face-covering veils in public places. According to the law proposed, women wearing burkas in France will face a £1,000 fine, lose french citizenship, and social benefits.
The right to choose is the main issue at stake here. Women should be given the freedom to choose whether they want to wear the burka or not. It would indeed be a draconian move to snatch away the right of women to wear the burka. It is not for the state but for the women to decide whether the burka is a source of liberation or oppression for them.
This law also threatens to divide and not unite faiths and people. This law reinforces prejudices toward the Islamic faith and people. We ask that the US State Department and the United States Government Support the Muslim Women in France.
