Just recently, House Speaker John Boehner tripled the amount of taxpayer money that can be spent to defend the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act in court – from $500,000 to $1.5 million. House Republicans are showing that they will spend any amount of money to keep this unfair law on the books -- and it's money that comes directly from taxpayers' pockets.
With the economic woes in Washington right now, House Republicans should focus on balancing the budget – not increasing spending to defend a law that flies in the face of our constitutional principles.
Tell Speaker Boehner today: DOMA denies rights to legally married, same-sex couples and you can't use our money to defend it.
Defending this law not only wastes government resources, but also continues the cycle of discrimination and treats legally married gay and lesbian couples as second-class citizens.
I ask that you cease additional spending on defending this discriminatory law. Spending taxpayer money on discrimination is not acceptable.
I look forward to your response on this critical issue.
