With conflicts increasing around the world, the US must stand together with our brothers and sisters to create an environment of hope to those who have suffered and lost everything. Currently, the most refugees are hosted in Turkey (2.5 million), Pakistan (1.6 million), and Lebanon (1.1 million) with the Islamic Republic of Iran (979,400), Ethiopia (736,100), and Jordan (664,100) also supporting many refugees fleeing their homes.
Too often refugees are forced into a state of limbo: unable to return home and unable to begin a new life in a host country. Refugees around the globe are trapped in this state for an average of 26 years. Susceptible to militarization recruitment, disease, and loss of hope during these prolonged stays in the camps, those who are now considered refugees may receive aid to maintain but need opportunities for new growth to form.
The United States has welcomed over 3.2 million refugees worldwide since 1975. Last year alone the United States resettled about 85,000 refugees; approximately 72% of those refugees were women and children. The United States has extreme vetting that requires 8 different federal government agencies, 5 separate background checks, and takes up to 2 years to complete.
With this is in mind, we believe that at this time it is in our nation's best interest to reinstate the previous agreed upon number of refugees allowed to enter into the United States back to 110,000. Please sign below.
