Al-Hassan Kanu started this petition to NYC Department of Transportation

Al-Hassan Kanu, candidate for New York City Council District 27, is asking the New York City Department of Transportation to remove a bus lane they placed between Liberty Ave. and Springfield Blvd., going down Merrick Blvd.

"The creation of this bus lane had no community input, has created more congestion, and our community is once again being double taxed for no reason at all" said Al-Hassan Kanu, community advocate and candidate for New York City Council District 27. "Our community is already a transit desert and the City should be making it easier for residents to reach their destinations, not harder."

Even before the bus lane was created, Merrick Blvd. was already a congested place to drive down, popular because it was so easy for residents to get to Roy Wilkins Park, visit a local business, or while they were on their way to and from work.

Now, traffic enforcement officers are ticketing drivers for various "reasons" to keep cars out of the bus lane, which is just another excuse to double tax communities of color.

The Department of Transportation gave no prior notice to the community before the bus lane was put in place, and instead implemented a policy that they believed would serve their own interests.

Sign this petition today, share it with your neighbors, and lets show that DOT cannot implement policies in our community without speaking with us first.
