Tell New York City Council to Fund Anti-Street Harassment Advocacy & Services

After completely eliminating funding for sexual assault prevention and victim services in June, the New York City Council held a hearing on "Street Harassment of Women and Girls in New York City," where they pledged to take action on this issue. Tell them that the first course of action is to correct a mistake they made four months ago by providing financial resources for NYC advocacy and direct services organizations that work with individuals and communities to prevent gender-based violence.

Letter to
NYC Council Member Julissa Ferreras
Just four months ago the New York City Council completely eliminating funding for sexual assault prevention and victim services, despite the fact that rape is on the rise in NYC. At the hearing on Thursday, October 28, 2010 ("Street Harassment of Women and Girls in New York City"), you pledged to take action to eradicate this type of public violation of girls and women. I am writing to urge you to put your money where your mouth is by providing funds to advocacy and direct service organizations in NYC--such as RightRides for Women's Safety, Girls for Gender Equity, Audre Lorde Project, and Sylvia Rivera law Project--that are working with individuals and communities to prevent gender-based violence. A survey or PSA on street harassment is meaningless without organizations doing the on-the-ground, face-to-face work, so provide adequate resources for these groups to create the cultural shift that is necessary to truly end street harassment.
