Tell Michigan Lawmakers to Protect Sports and Music Fans

Whether you frequently snag last-minute Tigers tickets, or love going to The Palace to see your favorite band, one thing is certain: Michigan fans are frustrated by the ticketing industry that never seems to work in our favor and that is increasingly expensive and challenging. Now we have an opportunity to do something about it.

Michigan lawmakers are considering legislation that will ban robotic ticket-buying software that scalpers use to grab all the best tickets, and stop some of the monopolistic practices of Ticketmaster and its partners. Here’s how:

Make Bots Illegal – How do shows sell out in seconds? One of the culprits is “bots” – software programs used by scalpers to scoop up hundreds of tickets in just a few seconds. Bot software cuts the line and keeps you from getting tickets, forcing you to buy tickets from resellers if you want to attend the most popular concerts and events. This legislation would make bots illegal in Michigan.

Preserves Fan Ownership – The legendary Ticketmaster monopoly is growing faster than ever, thanks to new “restrictive tickets.” Under Ticketmaster’s new restrictive rules you don’t own the tickets you buy – they do. And they determine what you can do with them. Often, these tickets cannot be sold or even given away. If they are transferable, you might have to pay Ticketmaster an extra fee for the “privilege.” This bill bans the use of unfair restrictive ticketing and ensures that you own the tickets that you buy.

For too long, the ticket industry has worked against the very people it is supposed to serve: the fans. Legislation to preserve a fair and safe ticket industry in Michigan has been introduced, but Ticketmaster and industry insiders oppose this legislation. Write to Senator Tory Rocca and Representative Jim Stamas, and ask their committees to stand with fans, not with the ticket industry.

Letter to
Michigan State House
Michigan State Senate
As a fan, I’m writing you today to ask you to support SB 1186-87 and HB 5827-28, bills that will help create an open, fair ticketing industry.

Fans in Michigan must be protected from the greedy and monopolistic practices of the ticket industry, and from scalpers who use “software bot” programs to jump the line and cheat regular fans out of tickets.

This legislation offers fans hope. It will outlaw the bot programs now deployed by scalpers, and rein in restrictive ticket practices used by Ticketmaster to expand its monopoly at fans’ expense. These bills’ fan- and market-friendly provisions would ensure your constituents have fair access to live-event tickets and maintain ownership of the tickets they buy.

As a fan, and a voter, I’m calling on you to support SB 1186-87 and HB 5827-28 and help protect our ticketing industry.
