TELL KENTUCKY TO STOP USING SALT FOR ICE REMOVAL
Why this petition matters

Salt, works on foods. Not roads, or side walks. Let’s talk about this, have you ever visited the northwest, east, or mid west? See how rough the roads are & cars? Older vehicles DESTROYED with rust. Failing infrastructure, for example “ Salt is also directly responsible for damaging or eroding certain materials over an extended period. It is now known that the 2012 collapse of the Algo Centre Mall in Elliot Lake, Ontario was the result of rusting from years of water and salt eroding the steel beams”. Salt all greatly affects our soil, water & wild life. Kentucky stands out amongst other states with beautiful land scape & world renowned horses. Do we really want this land scape to dwindle due to salt usage? Even the short time it’s used has great affects. After each winter, road repair commences for the remainder of the year, from salting the road, it penetrates into the pavement, concrete, breaking it down. Causing MASSIVE potholes, cracks, weakening road ways, ETC. It cost the U.S annually $5 billon(estimated) dollars in road repairs ALONE.
The alternatives to rock salt can be, calcium chloride, potassium chloride, and multiple others. Some of these methods are more expensive than the rock salt costs up front, BUT, what the rock salt costs US over time is far higher, at the rate of road work, wildlife, soil, which hurts our crops & animals the graze. This needs to be addressed.
Thank you.
