House Bill 2253 looks to make abortions services difficult in the state of Kansas by defining life to begin "at fertilization", force doctors to provide false correlations to women about breast cancer and miscarriages connected to abortion services, cut tax benefits for organizations affiliated with abortion services, and prevent any individual agent or volunteer of an agency associated with abortion form presenting information of sex education and human sexuality in schools in the state of Kansas. This is important because it infringes on Women's rights to reproductive health. This bill is taking us back to a prejudiced time in our country’s history; over thirty years ago Roe v. Wade gave women the right to decide what they want to do with their bodies and this is the way it should be. Women should not be misled by information and this is what the bill intends to do. Some of the bill’s components state that there is a positive correlation between abortions and the risk of breast cancer or future miscarriage, these are untruths. The American Medical Associations Code of Ethics states that “A physician shall uphold the standards of professionalism, be honest in all professional interactions, and strive to report physicians deficient in character or competence, or engaging in fraud or deception, to appropriate entities.” Therefore this bill would violate a physician’s duty to uphold their ethical code. Furthermore, schools should not be hindered by a lack of sex education based on provider affiliations, which is another component of this bill. “The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy,” states that over 33% percent of Kansas teenagers are sexually active. Sexually active teenagers, should they become pregnant, deserve to be informed consumers and need to know all of their choices; this cannot be accomplished if we discriminate against sexual education providers based on their affiliations. This 72 page law looks to infringe upon reproductive rights of women in addition to stiffen sex education providers and hinder funds helping organizations stay operating.
