Hope for Hoosiers started this petition to Chairman of the Indiana Democratic Party John Zody

Dear John Zody:

We respectfully ask that you resign as Chairman of the Indiana Democratic Party.  We thank you for your years of hard work and dedication, but we feel that a change is needed in the party.  In the last two election cycles Democrats have suffered major defeats.  All the while, Republicans have gained tremendous institutional power, have grown more emboldened with hateful rhetoric, and have passed legislation that harms working class and historically marginalized Hoosiers.

We just have to be honest and face the facts:

  • Under your tenure, Democrats lost all statewide seats after former Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz and U.S. Sen. Joe Donnelly lost their bids for re-election;
  • Democrats have not won the Governorship since 2000, almost two decades ago;
  • Currently, we only hold  2 out 9 U.S. Congressional seats for Indiana.  We have not picked up a single congressional seat under your leadership; and
  • Organizing for down-ballot candidates in many counties is non-existent.

You recently gave a public statement in which you remarked:  "This job is not about me; this is about moving the party forward."

We want the same for the Democratic Party, but we believe the only way to move forward is through a change in leadership. Progressive grassroots party organizing has proven to be a major factor in the success of Democrats across the nation. This begins with organizing communities around issues most pressing to them. Bottom up, base-building work in these trying times is critical.

This is what the Indiana Democratic Party must prioritize. This is what has been lacking. Progressive activism has grown in Indiana since 2016 and its aims are reflected in the most recent amendments to the INDEMS party platform. Progressive party activists pressed for a greater expressed commitment from the party to the fight for a living wage, immigration and education reform, and workers' and women's rights.

Teachers, workers, women, people of color, immigrants, farmers, felons, LGBTQI and working class Hoosiers deserve better.

We need to bring hope back to the party!

Chairman Zody,  we respectfully ask that you resign.
