Tell GRPS "NO" to proposed drastic cuts in Special Education Programming
This petition made change with 368 supporters!
The mission of the Special Needs Advocacy Alliance of Kent County (SNAAKC) is to advocate for the best interests of individuals with special needs and their families in Kent County, to empower those individuals and their families, to ensure appropriate educational services, and to ensure that their education improves their quality of life and their future.
There are presently proposed cuts to the GRPS district's special education center-based schools (Lincoln School, Lincoln Developmental Center, and Pine Grove). The planned cuts would drastically reduce the summer programming instruction hours by nearly 40%.
SNAAKC is asking:
1. That GRPS refrain from cutting instruction hours for the upcoming summer, and instead maintain the same calendar that was in place during the 2014/2015 school year.
2. That GRPS broaden their engagement with the community’s major stakeholders, which includes parents, all Kent County school districts, the health care community, employers, mental health agencies, and the broader public.
3. That GRPS be demonstrably transparent with the public on how its special education decisions are being considered, including revealing the funding mechanisms and the research utilized influencing these decisions.
4. That GRPS refrain from making decisions impacting the special needs community until it significantly engages the community and fully understands the impact of those decisions.
