Arizona's state legislature has passed a bill banning ethnic studies courses in all school districts. Its state education department wants to get rid of teachers who speak English with an accent. Tell Governor Brewer to veto the ethnic studies bill and to change the state education department policy on teachers who speak with accents.

Letter to
Arizona Governor
We see that Arizona's state legislature has passed a bill banning ethnic studies courses in all school districts. This will limit what teachers are allowed to teach and will also prevent teachers using multicultural content sorely needed in a school system that is increasingly diverse. We can't ignore our multicultural society. The Arizona state education department's effort to get rid of teachers who speak English with an accent similarly tries to ignore the reality of a growing diversity in our population. By doing this, we shortchange all of our students and do not help them to live in a democratic society.

We ask you not to sign the ethnic studies bill and to urge your state education department to allow teachers who are good at their jobs, continue regardless of their accents.

Thank you,
