Oak Creek. Aurora. Brookfield. Newtown. Every day, 33 Americans are murdered with guns. These tragedies will continue, until we take action to protect our children and families.
Right now in Wisconsin, we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to lead on life-saving gun reform.
State legislators have introduced a bill that would require background checks for ALL gun sales in Wisconsin – one of the most effective steps we can take to prevent gun violence and save lives. Current law makes it ridiculously easy for criminals to evade a pre-gun-sale background check by going to a “private seller.”
Just days after a Milwaukee court slapped Zina Daniel’s estranged husband with a restraining order, which legally barred him from having a gun, he went online to find a private seller. He met the seller in a McDonald’s parking lot, bought a gun without a background check, and, the next day, he murdered Zina and two others at a spa in Brookfield.
The latest poll shows that 89% of people in Wisconsin – including more than 80% of gun owners – want criminal background checks on ALL gun sales. There’s no reason for Wisconsin to wait for Washington to act. Colorado and other states have already passed laws to require universal background checks. Now is the time to make Wisconsin safer.
Join with people all across the state in demanding our lawmakers require criminal background checks for ALL gun sales in Wisconsin.
