The Issue

The freedom of the press is a cornerstone of democracy. Recently, FCC Chair Brendan Carr warned that broadcasters could lose their licenses over how they report on the war in Iran.

Government officials have the right to challenge media coverage they disagree with. But threatening to revoke broadcast licenses because of reporting raises serious concerns about press freedom and government pressure on independent journalism.

Americans across the political spectrum rely on a free and independent press to hold those in power accountable. Whether people agree or disagree with a news report, the government should not threaten media outlets with losing their licenses over coverage.

We call on FCC Chair Brendan Carr and the Federal Communications Commission to commit to protecting press freedom and to refrain from using broadcast licensing authority to pressure or punish news organizations for their reporting.

Sign this petition to tell the FCC: leave independent media alone and defend the First Amendment.
