After years of claiming they could do nothing about the neglect of the Glenayr Kitten Mill, Lanark Highlands Council is now rushing to demolish it -- even though they have reports from experts in Heritage Engineering and a Design/Planning architect saying:

·         The building can be made safe and can be fully salvaged

·         Re-purposing the building will provide economic, social and environmental benefit to the community and the municipality; demolishing it will create a wasteland with a huge lien on it.

Council has hidden behind a dubious claim of ‘confidentiality’ to develop its demolition plans while ignoring those reports – including committing to major contracts out of public sight (meeting in camera) and keeping all discussions of the issue off the public agenda. 

And since Council rules say people can only ask questions about items on the Agenda...Council can't discuss the reports and no one from the community can ask questions about them either.

Meanwhile, the Lanark Heritage Preservation Society, a community non-profit corporation, has a one-year option to buy the property from its current owner. The LHPS has committed to working with the community to assess environmental and legal requirements in restoring the building; developing plans for the future; raising designated heritage funds; and if all checks out, re-purposing the property as a self-supporting cornerstone of an urgently-needed economic revival in the Village.
