Daibaprikta Mitra started this petition to Pawan Kadyan (District Magistrate of Coochbehar) and

Single-use plastic is a nuisance - it can't be safely disposed of, whether you burn it, send it to landfills, or let it float away into oceans. Among all that trash, plastic straws are an especially annoying variety of plastics: We can do without them, but they show up in our drinks for no particular reason. Most restaurants don't think twice before putting the toxic stuff in our glasses, and for those of us trying to reduce our plastic footprint, drinking extremely fizzy drinks without them becomes a  major challenge.

Animals pay the price for our straw-loving habits as well. Just like carry bags, straws can choke wildlife or cause intestinal blockage. As for human animals, breathing smoke created by burning plastic was never good for anyone's health. Harming potential customers isn't exactly in a restaurant's best interests, either.

Luckily, there's a solution. Sign this petition to tell the local authority to ban the plastic straw - once and for all.  Make it necessary for restaurants to embrace reusable alternatives instead. Metal, glass or bamboo straws are an excellent way to get people to enjoy their drinks without worrying about global warming. They might even come off cheaper than plastic straws because of their durability.

Just imagine how much plastic waste could be saved, if the whole world's restaurants stopped using plastic straws. Coochbehar is a tiny piece of the world, but we all start somewhere. Other popular businesses might try ditching the plastic, too, to see if they can attract more eco-conscious customers. Showing our love for plastic-free stuff sends a message to companies already considering a change that we support them.

So sign this petition - after all, it's tiny droplets of water that create oceans. And it's us compassionate humans who create change.
