Photos recently surfaced of Jimmy John Liautaud, founder and CEO of the Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches chain, posing beside dead animals he’d shot.

“After all the hunts I’ve been on, I really am not a hunter, I am a shooter,” Liautaud wrote in the article “My Year of Hunting in 2009” for Hunting Illustrated. The highlight of his year was negotiating to kill an old buck that had been hand raised in a canned hunting facility in Nevada. “I smoked him at 10 yards,” Liautaud boasted.

In canned hunts, trophy hunters pay to shoot animals that cannot escape from their fenced-in confines.

“There’s absolutely nothing sporting about hand-raising tame animals, trucking them across the country, drugging them, and shooting them inside fenced pens or from the comfort of your keyboard,” stated Michael Markarian, chief operating officer of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).

Liautaud (along with other “hunters,” like country singer Troy Gentry) may need to take up a better hobby if the Sportsmanship in Hunting Act of 2011 (H.R. 2210), introduced last month by U.S. Reps. Steve Cohen of Tennessee and Brad Sherman of California, is passed.

H.R. 2210 would crack down on canned or captive hunting by prohibiting the transport of exotic animals for the purpose of killing them for trophies in confined areas. It would also ban remote-controlled hunting via the internet.

Although canned hunting is already prohibited or restricted in 26 states, more than 1,000 facilities are currently in business. Congress can help shut them down by stopping the interstate transfer of the animals, thereby drying up the facilities’ supplies.

It's time to put a nationwide end to this cruel "sport." Please sign the petition urging your representative to support H.R. 2210.
