We Want Fossil Fuel Divestment!

Dear Chancellor Christ,
Climate change is accelerating.
In this past year alone our country experienced record-breaking heat, droughts, and hurricanes, including the disastrous Hurricane Harvey, which impacted hundreds of thousands of people and will cost hundreds of billions of dollars. While we pay for Harvey (and the many more extreme weather events to come), fossil fuel companies are profiting.
The extraction, refinement, and burning of fossil fuels threatens the daily health and well-being of communities throughout California and around the world. Remaining invested in an industry fueling climate chaos and environmental injustice runs contrary to the University of California’s stated values, goals, and commitment to climate leadership.
As public pressure to confront climate change builds, we call on you to endorse our goal of UC-wide divestment from fossil fuels. We also call on you to demand that the Berkeley Foundation immediately freeze any new investment in fossil-fuel companies, and advocate for the formation of a committee whose purpose is to see the Berkeley Foundation's full divestment of fossil fuel companies in 5 years. We believe such action on behalf of students, faculty, and staff will not only be a sound decision for our institution’s financial portfolio, but also for the wellbeing of its current and future graduating classes and community members, who deserve the opportunity to graduate with a future not defined by climate chaos.
