We, the residents of the Town of Cary, value our environment, our health and the resiliency of our community, and ask that the Town Council of Cary formally adopt the Recommendations of the Tree Advisory Committee, proposed by the Environmental Advisory Board in June 2019, effective immediately.  A primary goal of the recommendations was to modify Chapter 7 of the Land Development Ordinance and align with the goals and objectives in the Cary Community Plan to:
• Support responsible tree planting and tree canopy protection in higher density
urban settings.
• Include open space requirements that relate to increasing tree canopy for new
greenfield and infill development.
• Include incentives for tree retention and conservation. Such incentives could
include allowing higher housing density; credit for exceeding landscaping
requirements; allowing greater building heights; reducing parking requirements;
or expedited project reviews. Incentives should be proportional to the maximum
amount of tree canopy cover that is preserved.
Prohibit clear cutting unless the developer documents in detail that no other
option is possible.

The Cary Appearance Manual should be revised to emphasize plantings that are native,
non-invasive, locally adapted, and provide appropriate species diversity

In June 2019, the Environmental Advisory Board provided recommendations to the Town of Cary to adopt recommendations to preserve, maintain and improve Cary's tree canopy.  Since Cary has not adopted a formal tree conservation policy, developers and investors have used this as an opportunity to clear-cut and reduce this tree canopy, and not work toward preserving our environmental for the future.  Our quality of life, the resiliency of our community, and the health of our environment are being compromised because the Town has not formally accepted these recommendations.

This petition is being sent to Town of Cary officials as our collective voice that our environment matters, our health matters, that the EAB recommendations on tree canopy be adopted, Land Development Ordinance, Planning and Zoning process, and Cary Community Plan be revised to include these recommendations.

Thank you for your immediate attention to this matter.

Sincerely,

Concerned Citizens of Cary
