Tell Cal State LA: Don't Suspend Asian and Asian American Studies

Cal State La is one of the most diverse universities in the country, and a pioneer in ethnic studies programs, the first in the nation to offer Chicano Studies. The school has frequently received awards and praise from a variety of institutions for its efforts to promote diversity.

Asian and Asian American Studies is one such successful program. With an operating cost of just $4,000 each year thanks to outside grants and support, the program is growing in popularity as evidenced by the growing number of students who enroll in the introductory course each year. Offering the only introductory course on Asia in the university, it provides knowledge of a region at a time when understanding between the people of both sections of the world is especially important.

Cutting AAAS is a great disservice to the students of the university, and the outpouring of support for the program from the California Faculty Association, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Northridge, notable scholars, and thousands of students and community members underlines the importance of the program to students, faculty, and community. Tell Cal State not to undermine its reputation as a school that fosters and encourages diversity by cutting such an important program at a time when ethnic studies programs all over the country are under attack.
