Casey O'Brien McDonough started this petition to Mayor of Salt Lake City, Salt Lake City, UT Erin Mendenhall and

We don’t want Hines proposed high-end, luxury apartment tower here!  We want our Utah Pantages Theater saved and restored!

Salt Lake City and its Redevelopment Agency has ignored its residents, ignored the City Council adopted Master Plan calling to save this theater, ignored the Redevelopment Agency’s own strategic guidelines calling for the theater to be saved, and created a narrative that does not follow Utah State Code regarding historic properties and master plan requirements, all to not only give this historic 103-year-old theater to a developer, Hines, but also provide the developers millions of dollars of tax credits and other incentives so they can destroy the theater and use the property to build a skyscraper of high-end luxury apartments all in the name of obscene corporate profits. Hines is an international real estate developer who already manages $160 BILLION. Now they are trying to destroy irreplaceable historic property to make even more while pitting city government against their own constitutes to do it.

Salt Lake City acquired the theater with tax dollars and public support for the specific purpose of saving and restoring it. Now they want Hines to take it and demolish it despite numerous interested parties who want to rebuild it for future generations. Hines has the money to purchase other property to build on, but the city seems to bend over backwards at every turn to make this deal happen regardless of what the residents of the city and their constituents want. Hines recently announced a new building development only a few blocks away on open ground, showing that they are perfectly capable of buying vacant property to build on without having to take public tax dollars so they can destroy our one-of-a-kind irreplaceable historic theater to do it.

We have another petition letting Salt Lake City know we don’t want this deal (see www.change.org/savetheutahpantages and we need your help letting the developer Hines know it as well. We want Hines to know we don’t want this rotten deal (see www.savetheutahpantages.org/investigation) that would destroy this treasure that is an intrinsic part of our city’s historic architecture and cultural heritage.

Sign our petition and call Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall at 801-535-7704, Hines Senior Managing Director Dusty Harris at 801-359-7522, and Hines CEO Jeff Hines at 713-621-8000; and tell them the following:

"We don’t want Hines to tear down the Utah Pantages Theater. We don’t want their high-end, luxury apartments here. We don’t want deals created behind closed doors with our tax dollars being spent to pay billionaire developers to destroy our city’s architectural and cultural history. We want them to stop this deal immediately, we want our theater returned to the people of Salt Lake City, and we want to save and restore the Utah Pantages Theater!”
