Have you ever felt like you’re being watched, observed? Do you like when someone takes a screenshot of your Snapchat? If you want to learn more keep on reading this petition which concerns you, for the simple reason of owning a device that can read this internet page.
Imagine a file, million pages long with huge amounts of data. Every page, every line of text, every letter, and every number concerns you. All that is you. All your life. Where you live, your personal accounts, your family, the place where you work, the shop you like visiting the most, all your Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat etc. posts, all your friends... It even states if you like going to the gym on Mondays or Tuesdays. If someone owned that file, that someone would know you better that anyone, even better than yourself. That’s funny don’t you think, what a “non-down-to-earth” situation. But… it’s true. As true as the fact that there are more smartphones that people on this planet. As true as the fact that people upload with just the tap of a screen their life, day by day. So, for many of you, this is an introduction to the other side of reality.
Ignorance can become the most dangerous poison. Education is the antidote to ignorance. The aim of this petition is to fight for the implementation of basic online security and privacy advice in the educational curriculum imparted in compulsory education.
The first thing everyone should be aware of is that everything you search, or post, or like, will stay on the internet forever. Everything you do on social media will always be available to find in the cloud.
It is part of the gigantic file with personal information which I mentioned before. All this information collected in a file is called big data. This file, specifically concerning mobile devices, it's generated through the service company the customer hires to be supplied with an internet connection.
Every time the phone connects to the internet to transmit data or receive date, either for checking a “WhatsApp” message, uploading a photo, or making a call, all this information together with the location of the device is locked and stored in this personal file in hands of the telephone company. The right person with the right knowledge can know where you are, who you are and basically anything else.
This is an example of the amount of privacy that the internet and social media have, in other words, zero. This is why it is very important to be aware of the use of internet connections and social media. Remember ignorance is a dangerous poison, but education can be the key.
I haven't stated in any point that everyone should throw their phones and computers away or even stop searching on the internet. The internet and social networks can be great tools. But great tools bear great responsibility and awareness.
One of the most important piece of advice to reduce the risk of exposing yourself to problems related to privacy issues is to not post anything in social networks which can be prejudicial in the future. Before posting anything go through this steps:
1. Does the message of the post (text, image, video…) irrupt any legal policies of the social media in which it will be posted?
2. Would your parents or close family react in a negative way if seeing the post?
3. Is the message harmful towards yourself or others?
4. Is the decision of posting it going against another person’s will?
5. Can it generate negative consequences for you or others in the future?
This is the main five questions every one of the people who use social networks needs to ask themselves before posting anything. It only recommended posting if all the answers to the following questions are NO. It may sound a bit exaggerated but taking this process of reflection before taking a decision online is real important if you don’t want to get in trouble. This is the mainstream of advice I can give you before this subject is further developed in the future.
All this said and once and for all, SIGN THIS PETITION if you want and believe that reinforcing privacy and security measures in the internet and social networks by implementing basic education on them is necessary.
