Protests and Military Crack Down

As Myanmar’s people are protesting the military coup that ended the country’s brief period of electoral democracy on Monday 1 February 2021, the generals have ordered a shutdown of all mobile data networks.

This is a most dangerous moment. The military can now crack down violently on demonstrators without the world watching. History leaves no doubt: there will be large-scale bloodshed as the brave people of Myanmar take to streets.

Norwegian Complicity

Telenor Myanmar is one of the biggest network providers in the country. It is a subsidiary of the Telenor Group, a Norwegian state-owned company that has won large shares of Myanmar’s lucrative telecommunications market in 2013 (after Norway has become one of the largest bilateral donors for Myanmar’s peace process).

Telenor Myanmar has shut down all its mobile data networks. In doing so it makes itself complicit in Myanmar’s military coup and any state violence that is likely to ensue under the cover of the internet shutdown.

This Petition Demands

  1. Telenor Myanmar to put people before profit and chooses the right side of history: Join the massive civil disobedience in Myanmar and open all lines of communication now!
  2. The Royal Norwegian Embassy in Myanmar and Ambassador Hilde Solbakken to move beyond empty words of support for Myanmar’s people: Stop the complicity of Norwegian state-owned enterprises with Myanmar’s military junta now!
