SAVE MUSI RIVER

PURPOSE: We demand access to clean water for the citizens in the city, and rejuvenation of the Musi river is the only way to make it possible.

Over the years, the once mighty Musi, a tributary of Krishna river, has been reduced to nothingness. Due to scant regard being paid to the environmental laws and haphazard planning and growth of Hyderabad city have reduced the river to a sewer drain carrying the domestic and industrial waste generated in Hyderabad city. For now, the river has been inundated with effluents from domestic and industrial sources. They are sucking the breath out of the river much like cholesterol in its veins. Even the river catchment areas have been subject to encroachment and have been converted into commercial ventures.

The chemical and industrial waste which enters the river seeps into the ground and contaminates ground water. The same water is consumed by people and adversely affects their health. Water from the Musi flows into fields in low-lying areas, contaminating food grains and vegetables. The stagnant water also results in several major problems including a high incidence of diseases such as arthritis, skin allergies, malaria, dengue, food poisoning, eye diseases, pediatric problems and jaundice etc.

The Musi river also serves as a major outlet for rain water drainage. Clogging the river is a certain step towards disaster. In case of very heave rains, water will not be able to flow smoothly in numerous lakes and river Krishna and this can lead to massive flooding in the city. Similar instances have been seen during floods in Chennai and Kerala. The city has been extremely lucky so far, receiving low to normal rainfall, but we can’t keep pushing luck.

The future water security of Hyderabad city lies in an integrated management of the entire catchment area of the Musi river and a number of water bodies that are still existing in and around the city.
