Although the pollution is not as great as that of the Ganges, the Godavari River is likely to cause a disaster. Although the Godavari River is considered a sacred river after the Ganges, the river has been polluted and in some areas it is not even suitable for bathing. Most of the people including Hindus and people of other religions believe that bathing in Godavari is sacred and that they can get rid of their sins after taking a sacred bath here. But according to environmentalists, the water from the Godavari River cannot be used for agricultural purposes due to pollution. 4,444 sources said that plastic garbage, industrial garbage, pond sewage, chemical waste in agriculture, especially raw sewage from Godavari villages, towns and cities is spilling into the river. According to the older generation, in ancient times they drank water without filtering it. But
now it is not advisable to use river water even for bathing. However, some people have bathed in the river where it appears clean. Even the river channels are polluted and some channels have a bad smell. Environmentalists said that the Godavari river is polluted from its birthplace Nasik, as various industries have been built across the river in Maharashtra and industrial sewage and sewage is discharged into the river. In Andhra Pradesh, however, the waters of Godavari flow mainly from Pranahitha and Sabari. Environmentalists said that although the water is contaminated from its birthplace, it is best in the agency's mountain areas and near the Polavaram project. But near Rajahmundry the pollution is very high and all kinds of rubbish and plastic float in the river. The fishermen said they were having difficulty fishing in the river due to the accumulation of garbage. They said that during the capture, they had to spend half the time removing the garbage. The well-known environmentalist Tallavajjula Patanjali Sastry said that the water in Bhadrachalam and the sewage in Rajahmundry and many villages across the river are polluted and other industrial wastes are spilling into the sea and causing future dangers. He suggested that the government release some turtles that can purify the water as part of the immediate steps. He said that Eluru's canal, which receives Krishna's water, is completely polluted and cannot even be used for bathing. Governments must not give in to such circumstances on the Godavari River. He said that the government should take care to urgently clean the Krishna and Godavari rivers.
