This years state junior certificate exams have been officially cancelled by the Irish government.

However, there are still schools around the country that expect 3rd year students to sit a “junior cert exam” not in June, but in May. Students in many schools completed regular assessments throughout the school year, in case the pandemic got in the way of education and examinations. Now, that is the reality, yet schools are still pushing to have exams done.

Students everywhere feel that in this bizarre time where the ability to learn is next to impossible, predicted grades should be put in place. We feel that these “junior cert” results should be based off of the average of the regular assessments that took place before and during the lockdown to fully portray the ability of each student throughout the terms.

Irish third year students put extra work and effort into the assessment exams, in case of the exact scenario we are in, however, many schools seems to be wasting all of our work. It would get you asking, “why did I stress myself out so much if they were never going to be put towards anything?!”

In this country mental health is almost brushed off as a joke. The stresses of being a student today is enough to drive anyone over the edge! Yet in times like these you would wonder if the ones supposed to educate us even care at all. The constant uncertainty for students makes everything so much worse than they have to be. Adding examinations that our capabilities will be judged on would make matters so much worse. Going as far as making those exams sooner into the school year would effect so many young people in such a negative way.

With that, predicted grades should be used.

An end of year exam would be no where near “rewarding” for all the hard work we put in to keep up with the past 2 school years.

As the students to be sitting the exam, our voices should be heard.
